You Can! We Can!

You Can!

In 1987, I started Walking The World as an outdoor adventure program for folks who are 50 years of age and better. At that time, I had already spent 12 years working as a wilderness guide. My own experience was that time in the outdoors offers a wide range of benefits that few other activities can match. My goal with WTW was to share these benefits with as many clients as possible. Twenty years later, I still follow this goal - yearly, with hundreds of new friends exploring dozens of countries.

In the early years at Walking The World, one of our most popular trips was to the canyon country of Southeast Utah. In Arches National Park there is a beautiful trail to a majestic red sandstone formation called Delicate Arch. Just before getting to the arch itself, there is a section of trail that, to some of our hikers, just looks daunting. Many have questioned if they can physically and safely make it to the arch. They can, of course, but until they believe it their own minds, a barrier exists to their success. Our message to each of our hikers is “You Can!” “You can do it”. We encourage everyone, with the assistance of our guides if they choose, to walk across this section to the arch. Most choose to do so and, once they get to the arch, comes the realization that they can really do so much more than they ever thought they could. Their world of possibilities expands and they realize that by simply opening their minds a little, many new and ambitious goals are possible.

I believe that. I believe that almost anything is possible when we work together.

WE CAN!

I believe that we can find a cure for the devastations of Alzheimer’s disease.

I believe that, as a group, the 89 million of us who are 50 years of age and better, as well as those who are still striving for that magical age, can raise the money necessary to hurry up the process of finding a cure.

I admit that I’m impatient. I’m not very good at sitting around and waiting for someone else to raise the funds necessary to find a cure. My impatience is personal- my mom has Alzheimer’s - but I also am impatient to see a cure found so that no one else has to suffer the effects of this debilitating disease.

Alzheimer’s, as most of you already know is a disease the takes the joy of living not only from the individuals who are affected by it but from their family and friends as well. If you don’t already know someone who suffers from this disease, it is almost inevitable that you will – too soon.

Currently there are more than 4.5 million Americans who have Alzheimer’s and that doesn’t include those individuals in other countries around the world who are also affected by this insidious disease. And the economic cost to our society, each year, is estimated to be $100 Billion. So, what can we do together? The easiest thing is to raise as much money as possible so more researchers can explore more potential cures. I would like to ask you to join me in the race to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. My goal is to find one million caring and impatient individuals who will each donate a minimum of $10 to help find a cure for this disease. All funds would go directly to the Alzheimer’s Association, the largest Alzheimer’s research and educational organization in the United State.

To meet this goal, I would ask you for two things;

1.  Visit the link below to make your donation of at least $10.00 directly to the Alzheimer’s Association. To make it as easy as possible for you, Walking The World, in agreement with the Alzheimer’s Association, has set up our own web page on the Alzheimer’s Association website. This link will take you directly to the site where you can make your donation online.

2. Email this message to as many of your friends as possible. Or course, if you would like to call or write them or just talk to your friends in person, that would be great too.

WHAT WE WILL ACHIEVE: One Year. 1 million individuals. $10/person donation. $10 million to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s.

What will it cost you? Six cents a day. I hope that you will give more; that you will give as much as you possibly can. Every cent and every dollar will go directly to the Alzheimer’s Association of America.

There’s a wonderful quote about commitment that reads…”Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.” W.H. Murray

And Ferdinand Foch said, “The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire.”

There are many individuals throughout the world today who, because of the impact Alzheimer’s has had on them, can no longer enjoy the quality of life that you and I are able to. My hope is to kindle a spark that will ignite a bonfire of passion in the hearts of all 89 million of us who have reached the 50+ pinnacle to step up and join together to find a cure for Alzheimer’s.
