Positively Penguin Preferred™
You may be wondering what Positively Penguin Preferred™ is all about. Do you see those three penguins “walking the world” in our logo? Now these penguins aren’t just any penguins. They’re Emperor penguins, and if you’ve seen the movie or video entitled The March of the Penguins you’ll know their story.

For me, the Emperor penguin represents the ideal of adventure travel, what Walking The World is all about. The epic journey Emperor penguins undertake once every year has all the elements of what I think makes life eminently enjoyable. Adventure, drama, exploration, friendship, sociability, relying on and helping one another, and of course, walking.

Of course, the Emperors undertake their journey in Antarctica. While most of our trips take place in more hospitable parts of the world, Antarctica is a magical place and a destination we hope to include in our travels someday. Of course, we’ll do it a bit more comfortable manner than the Emperors do!

All that being said, there are some other qualities that the Emperor represents that I see reflected in each of you as well. An openness and a passion for life and living. A desire to meet new peoples and see new places. Persistence in following your dreams. Courage to step out into the world and open yourself to new experiences and to explore the limits to what you can do, physically, emotionally and mentally. And a desire to be a part of a community, whether it’s a small group of travelers or the larger world community that we all live in.

You might notice that the penguins are supporting one another as they move forward. At Walking The World we believe that we’ll all do better, enjoy life more and live more fully when we reach out a hand to those around us.

Many of you are probably familiar with the American Automobile Association, or as they are more commonly known…AAA.

We’ve established our own association called Positively Penguin Preferred, or as we will be more commonly known…PPP.

What is the mission of the Positively Preferred Penguin Association (PPP)? To establish a worldwide list of accommodations, restaurants, attractions, trails, outdoor equipment stores, and guide services, etc., that represent the best in the spirit of adventure travel.

We’re not your standard rating service though. While the quality of an accommodation, for example, is important, we’re also looking for how friendly the staff are, their level of environmental and social consciousness, how sincere they are in their desire to have you stay with them, how community minded they are, and where possible, whether they will allow a discount, however minimal, to you for using their Positively Preferred Penguin establishment or service.

Since we’re just beginning our program we invite you to help us as we develop our rating guidelines by sending in your personal recommendations for hotels, motels, B&B’s, guide services, outdoor stores, restaurants, attractions, etc. We’re also putting together a list of local guides throughout the world that we hope you’ll benefit from. We’ll include your recommendations in our “Reader Recommended PPP establishments”.

After all, if, like the Emperor Penguins, you’ve walked and explored for months, in some of the world’s harshest conditions, wouldn’t you want the best in services and a smile when you finally come in out of the weather?
