Days 1-4 Manchester-Ilkley
Moors-Bolton Abbey-River Wharfe-Malham
We begin our hikes in England’s Yorkshire Dales with
walks through the wild and mysterious Ilkley Moors
to the White Well, along the beautiful River Wharfe,
past medieval Bolton Abbey to the former Royal
hunting lodge at Barden Tower, to the classic Dales
village of Malham, the waterfall at Janet’s Foss and
the dramatic scenery of Gordale Scar. Of course
what would a day be without afternoon tea and a
visit to the local pubs?
Days 5-8 Grasmere-Dove
Cottage-Rydal Mount-Keswick-Derwentwater
England’s Lake District, a land of gentle beauty,
history and charm. Our walks take us to Grasmere
and to Wordsworth’s homes at Dove Cottage and Rydal
Mount, into the rolling green countryside and
Loughrigg Tarn, to the typical lakes village of
Rosthwaite in Borrowdale and to dramatic Lodore
Falls. Theatre buffs can enjoy an optional visit to
the evening theatre at Keswick’s Theatre By The
Lake. High English tea in Watendlath and Grange.
Days 9-10 Beatrix
Potter’s Hawkshead-Brantwood-Manchester
Our final full day includes a visit to Hawkshead, of
Beatrix Potter fame and home of the Beatrix Potter
Museum, or if you choose, to the home of Victorian
artist, critic and social reformer John Ruskin where
you’ll want to sample the sticky toffee pudding, a
Lake District specialty. A classical reading of
some of England’s finest poetry tops our final
night’s dinner in Manchester.
