Detailed Itinerary
What we Provide

The islands of Maui and Hawaii will be our home for eleven days of exotic hiking. Our first destination will be the "Big Island" of Hawaii, the largest and most diverse of all the Islands. Our days here will find us exploring spectacular Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, South Point, the southern most point in the U.S, City of Refuge National Historical Park, the city of Kona and the Kohala Valley. In Volcanoes National Park, a former park ranger who is well versed in volcanoes and natural history will join us. We'll stroll along the still warm floor of a dormant caldera, relax on a black sand beach, walk through an ancient lava tube, and possibly, like our last several groups, view active lava flows on their march to the ocean.

Next, we’ll head to the Island of Maui, a favorite of everyone! Capped with mystical Haleakala Crater, Maui offers the best of the best. Our days will find us exploring the depths of Haleakala Crater, hiking to the legendary 420' Waimoku Falls, the magical Seven Sacred Pools, along the ancient King’s Highway and through a bamboo forest. On our final night we’ll enjoy a festive Hawaiian Luau!

( B = Breakfast included, L = Lunch included, D = Dinner included )

Pre-Trip   The trip officially begins on day 1 at 9:00 a.m. Transportation is available from the airport in Hilo. Accommodations can be found either in Hilo, or by prior arrangement with Walking The World, at our accommodations near Volcanoes National Park.

Day 1 - Welcome to Hawaii... your home in paradise for the next eleven days. We begin our trip on Hawaii, known as the Big Island. We’ll spend the next several days exploring Volcanoes National Park as well as the historical sites and trails of the areas around Kona and the north shore of Hawaii. Our trail today takes us along the rim of Kilauea, the best known and most popular of Hawaii’s volcanoes. Kilauea and Mauna Loa, both live volcanoes, lie within the boundaries of 350 square mile Volcanoes National Park. B, L, D

Day 2 - Kilauea Iki trail... Kilauea Iki, formed in 1959, is a 400-foot cone of ash and pumice, and the location of our hike today. Our trail takes us down into Kilauea Iki, across the still steaming crater floor and up and out a side vent. You’ll love our unique walk to the mysterious land of petrified trees. B, L

Day 3 - A drive along beautiful Saddle Road... will take us to Kona, on the other side of the island, and some short hikes to several heiaus (ancient temples). B, D

Day 4 - North Kohala Valley Trail... On our last day we’ll venture into a verdant tropical valley marked by the cascades of towering waterfalls, the heavenly scent of yellow ginger, the showy red of torch ginger and numerous wild orchids. B, L

Day 5 - Today we’ll fly to Maui... the Land of Enchantment. We start our magical adventure with a drive down the famous “Road to Hana”, 52 miles long with 617 curves, 56 bridges and some of the best scenery on Maui. Along the way we’ll take time to enjoy spectacular ocean views, visit tropical gardens and trek to some of the area’s cascading falls and clear cool pools. B, D

Day 6 - Wainapanapa State Park and Red Sand Beach... Wainapanapa State Park, translated as ‘glistening water’, is the starting point for our 5-mile walk along the ancient King’s Highway trail. In the park, we’ll take time to visit some ancient heiaus (temples), view some of the stone walls used by early Hawaiians and explore the unique black sand beach here. Our walk takes us along the shoreline, giving us breathtaking views of the blue waters of the Pacific as they crash against the shore. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy time swimming and snorkeling at Red Sand Beach. B, L, D

Day 7 - Fagan’s Cross and the Blue Pool... Near Hana, a large cross atop Puu o Kahaula, memorializing the memory of Paul Fagan, marks the endpoint of our first hike today. Paul Fagan helped revive Hana’s economy after the 1940’s through his introduction of cattle ranching and tourism. Next, we head to Ulaino Road and the Blue Pool. Ulaino Road, a small track, is a delight to walk on and takes us past guava and kukui nut trees, lantana, cayenne vervain, huge mango trees and dwarf poinciana trees. After about two miles, we’ll reach a stream highlighted by a cool blue pool and bordered by a cliff of black rock overhung with the rich green of kukui trees. And next? A short walk to a beach framed by black lava cliffs, coastal rainforest and a waterfall tumbling to the beach. In the afternoon, take time to wander along the beach, enjoy a mango shake or just relax in the sun. B, D

Day 8 - Dayhike to Seven Sacred Pools and Waimoku Falls... One of the most beautiful places on Maui, the ancient Hawaiians lived, played, and farmed here. The trail takes us across Palikea Stream, through dense forests of guava and bamboo, by overgrown taro patches, along Pipiwai Stream and finally to striking Waimoku Falls and pool. B, L, D

Day 9 - Haleakala National Park... Dayhike into Haleakala Crater, which in Hawaiian means "the house of the sun". The Crater is the centerpiece of 27, 284 acre Haleakala National Park and is 7 1/2 miles long, 2 1/2 miles wide and 21 miles in circumference. We'll hike along the Halemauu Trail to the Bottomless Pit, Pele's Paint Pot, and the Silversword Loop. L

Day 10 - La Perouse Bay and Hawaiian Luau... Today’s hike is along the King’s Highway, a trail originally built around the island for the King of Maui and his messengers. We’ll follow this ancient coastal trail past several small secluded bays to an idyllic peninsula bordered by the crashing waves of the Pacific. Don’t forget your water and film today! We’ll spend our last evening together in this tropical paradise enjoying the magic of a traditional luau feast, complete with native dancing, music and a bountiful repast of local foods. D

Day 11 - Gather our memories and bid Aloha in true Hawaiian Spirit... The airport is a 50-minute drive you may book your flight at any time.

Difficulty: Moderate with some longer hikes available
