What we Provide

New Mexico—it’s the simple grace of pale adobe walls against a turquoise blue sky; the mouth-watering smell of chilis and hot tamales drifting across a crowded plaza; the incredible beauty of a high mountain meadow filled with wildflowers—red Indian paintbrush, blue phlox, and white bedstraw. The region northwest of Santa Fe offers an incredible variety of walks through high alpine forests under the shadows of the Sangre de Cristos, over rugged canyon and mesa country dotted with Pinion Pine, and down quiet, shaded Spanish-style avenues. From the above timberline heights of Wheeler Peak to the winding streets of the living museum called Santa Fe, experience a land made incredibly rich by the intersection of Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo-American cultures. Come see why New Mexico truly is the Land of Enchantment.

This itinerary may be changed at the discretion of the trip leader.
( B = Breakfast included, L = Lunch included, D = Dinner included )
Please note Transportation is provided from the Albuquerque Airport at 2 p.m. on the first day of the trip. If you are driving, we will meet you at our Santa Fe accommodations at approximately 3:30 p.m. You will be able to leave your vehicle here until our return to Santa Fe for the last two nights of the trip.
Day 1... Welcome to the Land of Enchantment. Our drive from Albuquerque to Taos, New Mexico, will take us through a number of reservations, along the Rio Grande River and into the high desert plateaus surrounding Taos. Trip orientation and welcome dinner. D
Day 2... Our hike today takes us north of Santa Fe to the Wild Rivers Recreation area and the convergence of the Red and Rio Grande Rivers. A remote and spectacular area set aside to protect a section of the Rio Grande Gorge, our walk takes us down into the Gorge for outstanding hiking along the Rio Grand itself. Here in the high country around Taos, the Rio Grande runs fast and clear and offers many opportunities to dip ourselves or our toes into the river’s cool waters. The shores of the river are lined with Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Pinion Pine and Juniper, so there’s plenty of shade to relax under while enjoying the many vistas the gorge provides. Distance: 6 miles and 680-800 feet elevation gain. B, L, D
Day 3... The spectacular alpine areas of northern New Mexico offer sweeping vistas, colorful early summer wildflower displays, the brilliant gold of the Aspen in the Fall, high mountain lakes and deep forests. Our hike to Serpent Lakes and Jicarita Peak (for those who choose) offers the best of it all. 5.5-11 miles and 800-2200 feet elevation gain. B, L, D
Day 4... Taos Pueblo-Chimayo. We begin our day with a visit to 800-year-old Taos Pueblo, a National Historic Landmark and home to Tewa-speaking residents. Learn about the history of this unique pueblo as our local guide takes us through this community of ancient Anasazi style adobe dwellings. Then we’re off to Chimayo for an in-home demonstration of Indian weaving and a visit to the pilgrimage site of Santuaro de Chimayo. B, L, D
Day 5... Bandalier-Tsankawi Ruin-Santa Fe. Bandalier was a perfect place for ancient peoples of the Pueblo culture to congregate. Frijoles Canyon and its year-round stream provided water, trees, land for agriculture and forest cover for wildlife. In fact, with only about half of the Monument explored, over 2400 sites have been discovered. Our hikes take us along to the Park’s major ruins, down the Falls Trail and to Tsankawai, an outlying site with an unexcavated 350-room pueblo dating from the 15th century. 2-8 miles and 800 feet elevation gain. B, L, D
Day 6... George O’Keeffe-Ghost Ranch-Box Canyon-Chimney Rock. The areas around Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch provided the spectacular blue skies and high mesa country that were the settings for many of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. We’ll visit Georgia O’Keeffe’s house and hike the Box Canyon and Chimney Rock trails at Ghost Ranch. You’ll love our walks through the cool canyons and streambeds of Box Canyon and the wonderful views of the Piedra Lumbre Basin on the Chimney Rock Trail. 3-7 miles and 200-600 feet elevation gain. B, L, D
Day 7... Canyon Road in Santa Fe is home to a myriad of outstanding galleries of all types. We’ll take time to enjoy this unique setting before leaving Santa Fe for our trip back to the airport at Albuquerque. On our way, we’ll stop at the beautiful Tent Rocks National Recreation area for an exploration into geological wonderland. 3 miles and 400 feet elevation gain. B
Difficulty: “Hiker” Days cover 4 – 9 miles with uphill sections on unpaved but well defined hiking trails.
