Days 1       Day 2-4       Day 5-8

From the white-capped majesties of Mounts Hood and Rainier, to the volcanic tragedy of Mount St. Helens, the Cascade members of the Pacific Ring of Fire rise nobly above their forested shoulders, solitary testaments to the power and elegance of the natural world.  Join Walking the World in Washington State and discover the magic of a lush landscape where perfect mountain cones and rivers of ice preside over impossibly thick forests of Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce and Western Red Cedar.  Trek the trails of Paradise on the slopes of Mount Rainier and relax in the comfort of an alpine lodge, then clamber the wild banks of the Columbia River Gorge and see just how tall a “fourteener” really is when seen from sea level.  Don’t miss this stunning display of nature, one of North America’s finest.

Adventure Trips: Washington State Olympic BeachBest of the Best

Columbia River Gorge
From deep in the Canadian Rockies the Columbia River carves its way to the Pacific, swelling in majesty and magnitude by the time it cuts through the Gorge, creating a stunning landscape of crystal falls and deep fir forests carpeted with ferns.

 Mount St. Helens
Her blasted crater and new growth forests speak to the awesome, destructive power of nature and its irrepressible determination toward life.  See for yourself why this lonely, ruined mountain remains a breathtaking jewel of the Cascade Range.

 Skyline Trail
Winding the slopes of Mount Rainier past a showcase of wildflowers and the vast snowfields of Nisqually Glacier, the trail leads to an unparalleled view of Mounts Adams, St. Helens, and Hood…and sometimes to a friendly snowball fight.

Adventure Trips: Washington State Mt. St. Helens
Day 1  Portland-Mt. St. Helens

From Portland we head north and east into the beautiful, but stark, area of devastation left by the explosive eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980.  Our hike from the Johnston Ridge Visitor Center, opened in 1997, offers dramatic views into this still smoldering crater and its growing 920-foot lava dome.

Days 2-4  Quinault-Kalaloch-Hoh Rain Forest-Olympic Beach-Dungeness Spit-Pt. Townsend

Our hikes will takes us to the Hoh Rain Forest and its stands of old-growth Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce, including the world’s largest Spruce that’s over 1000 years old, measures more than 58 feet around and reaches a height of 191 feet.  Stroll at your leisure while exploring the numerous tide pools of Ruby Beach and relax in the evenings near the ocean’s edge at Kalaloch Lodge. Hike Dungeness Spit, the world’s longest natural sand spit and look across the Sound to Mt. Rainier during our night in Pt. Townsend.

Days 5-8  Puget Sound-Mt. Rainier-Nisqually Glacier-Reflection Lake-Skyline Trail

Mt. Rainier, sister to Mt. St. Helens, is home to more glaciers that any peak outside of Alaska and is one of the jewels in our system of National Parks.  We’ll hike some of Rainier’s finest trails, including a moderate walk through deep forest and meadows alive with wildflowers to Reflection Lake and along the Skyline Trail that skirts the very base of Mt. Rainier and offers us views of Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. You’ll want to take time to savor the pristine beauty of this alpine wonderland.
