Day 1 Portland-Mt. St.
Helens
From Portland we head north and east into the
beautiful, but stark, area of devastation left by
the explosive eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980.
Our hike from the Johnston Ridge Visitor Center,
opened in 1997, offers dramatic views into this
still smoldering crater and its growing 920-foot
lava dome.
Days 2-4
Quinault-Kalaloch-Hoh Rain Forest-Olympic
Beach-Dungeness Spit-Pt. Townsend
Our hikes will takes us to the Hoh Rain Forest and
its stands of old-growth Western Red Cedar, Douglas
Fir and Sitka Spruce, including the world’s largest
Spruce that’s over 1000 years old, measures more
than 58 feet around and reaches a height of 191
feet. Stroll at your leisure while exploring the
numerous tide pools of Ruby Beach and relax in the
evenings near the ocean’s edge at Kalaloch Lodge.
Hike Dungeness Spit, the world’s longest natural
sand spit and look across the Sound to Mt. Rainier
during our night in Pt. Townsend.
Days 5-8 Puget
Sound-Mt. Rainier-Nisqually Glacier-Reflection
Lake-Skyline Trail
Mt. Rainier, sister to Mt. St. Helens, is home to
more glaciers that any peak outside of Alaska and is
one of the jewels in our system of National Parks.
We’ll hike some of Rainier’s finest trails,
including a moderate walk through deep forest and
meadows alive with wildflowers to Reflection Lake
and along the Skyline Trail that skirts the very
base of Mt. Rainier and offers us views of Mt.
Adams, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. You’ll want to
take time to savor the pristine beauty of this
alpine wonderland.
This itinerary is intended as
an hors d'oeuvre to whet your travel appetite.
