How Do I Prepare?
PHYSICAL PREPARATION: Walking The World wants to make sure that your walking vacation is a successful and enjoyable experience in every way.  Each participant who travels with us is entitled to a $5.00 discount on Walk 500-Take The Challenge! Written by our President and Founder, Ward Luthi, Walk 500 provides a wealth of information on how to begin and continue a lifetime program of fitness walking that will help you prepare for your vacation with Walking The World.

Do we walk as a group?
We ask you to keep in mind that Walking The World vacations are designed as group trips. As such, there will be a variety of levels of experience, fitness and travel background among your fellow participants. While we travel as a group, we make a concerted effort to maximize your individual experience when possible. When you bring an attitude of adventure and an open mind, you’ll return with a new perspective on the world and yourself, a wonderful group of new friends, and memories that will last a lifetime.

How will I know if a particular trip is right for me?

On Walking The World trips there is no upper age limit and no requirement of previous outdoor experience. If you are in good health, exercise, and commit to being in good shape for hiking by the first day of the trip, you should be comfortable on our trips. Do keep in mind that some trips are more challenging than others. If you have questions, please call us at 888-825-5056, and we’ll be glad to help you choose the trip that is right for you.

Who will be leading the trip?

We take great pride in the group of men and women who lead our trips. Most of these outstanding individuals have been with us for years. They come from a variety of backgrounds, have years of experience as outdoor leaders and are usually employed full-time in other occupations. They love sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with you and are committed to helping make your trip a memorable one.

How many leaders are on each trip?

For years, Walking The World has felt that it’s important to have two qualified leaders with each trip. When traveling in the outdoors, especially in foreign countries, two experienced guides can better manage trip logistics, help ensure group safety and maximize the group experience. Unless a particular trip has very low enrollment, there will be two guides with your group. Our local guides are with us for the entire trip, not just for part of a day or part of a trip. When you’re trying to decide on an adventure company to travel with, we invite you to ask about this important component of your trip.

Safety?

There is no element of any trip more important to us than the safety and comfort of each participant. Your guides will have First-Aid and CPR skills and a wealth of outdoor leadership experience.

Do I need special gear on a Walking The World vacation?

All of our trips feature day hikes. After a day exploring a unique and beautiful part of the world, we return to comfortable accommodations for a night of restful sleep. On the trail, you will need a good pair of broken-in, above the ankle hiking boots, a comfortable daypack large enough to carry your water, rain gear, and on some days, a packed lunch. You may want to add sunscreen, moleskin, a camera and a personal journal.

I’m a single traveler. Will I feel comfortable?

One of the most memorable parts of a Walking The World trip is the group of people you’ll travel with. On all trips there is a mix of couples and single travelers who consistently say that they feel delighted at the camaraderie that exists among all group members. At Walking The World we know what it’s like to be a single traveler. Our roommate matching program has been designed with you in mind and is a great way to avoid paying the single supplement as well as making new friends. By signing up early you will increase your chances of being matched with a roommate. If we are unable to match you with a roommate, you will be required to pay the applicable single supplement rate.

How do we get from one accommodation to another?

Depending on group size, we use seven, twelve or fifteen passenger vans to transport ourselves and our luggage from one accommodation to the next.
