MAINE - WALKING THE COAST
MAINE - CAMDEN/ACADIA/BAR HARBOR
Now is your chance to enjoy the glorious fall colors of New England firsthand with daily walks through some of the most scenic landscapes in the entire U.S. Walking The World offers an eight-day autumn excursion to the islands and coast of Maine, and, while we can't guarantee the peak of the foliage season, late September and early October offer a good chance of seeing the trees in their glory.
Our days will be spent walking among the red, yellow, and orange-splashed trees along the rocky coast and on the islands of Maine. In the evenings we'll settle gently into the various Bed & Breakfasts we use. Along the way, we'll stop to visit with local fishermen, feast on lobster and clams, learn how to speak the local brogue, and hike some of this country's most beautiful trails.
ITINERARY (May be changed at the discretion of the trip leader):
Pre-trip We recommend that you plan to arrive at least one day in advance. Not only will you be ready and well rested, this allows you to explore some on your own. The Holiday Inn, 404 Odlin Rd., Bangor, ME 04401, Phone 800-914-010, offers a courtesy shuttle from the airport.
Day 1 Our trip begins at 9:00 am at the Holiday Inn. From there we'll head southwest to Camden, Maine, and Penobscot Bay for our first three days of exploration. After checking in and lacing up our boots, we'll explore the local harbor and enjoy a fabulous 2-hour sail on Penobscot Bay where we’ll keep a lookout for whales, seals and bald eagles. Our activities will help build up an appetite for an all-you-can eat lobster feast. What a way to get to know Maine and your fellow participants. L, D
Day 2 We'll start early this morning with a short drive south to Port Clyde, where we’ll board the "Elisabeth Ann," the mail ferry to Monhegan Island. Be sure to keep a lookout for whales and seals on the way! Monhegan is a small island well known for its spectacular coastal walks and talented artists. B, L
Day 3 Today we'll explore the hills around Camden, stand atop the summit of Mt. Battie, marvel in the beauty of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay, and hike the Megunticook Mountain Ridge Trail. Lunch will be enjoyed atop a large granite outcropping near the summit of Mt. Megunticook that affords unforgettable views of the ocean and surrounding hillsides. Total hiking mileage: approximately 6 miles. Free evening in town with plenty of time to sample Camden's great restaurants. B, L, D
Day 4 We transfer to Bar Harbor, where a visit to Acadia's Visitor Center helps us get acquainted with the area. Our local Maine guide leads us down some of the park's most beautiful trails, including Sand Beach and Great Head. B,L
Days 5 & 6 Acadia National Park. Weather will decide the order of these two spectacular hikes. Cadillac Mountain will provide splendid views of the Maine coast and the brilliant foliage on the surrounding hillsides. We'll follow the north ridge trail 2.2 miles to the summit of Cadillac, where we'll enjoy a leisurely lunch before descending 3.7 miles down the south ridge trail, Acadia’s longest ridge. The Amphitheater hike will take us through fields of blueberry bushes on our way to a view of the Cranberry Islands and the Atlantic Ocean. B, L
Day 7 Today we travel through history. Our destination is the most photographed spot in Acadia National Park. We walk around Jordan Pond before joining the carriage trail that takes us to the only cobblestone bridge in the park. There’ll be plenty of time to enjoy our last glimpses of fall foliage. And afterwards, if you still have a taste for lobster, we’ll celebrate our time together with another feast featuring Maine’s favorite delicacy. B, L, D
Day 8 After a short morning walk, we'll drive back to Bangor to connect with our flights home. Flights may be booked to leave any time after 12:00 noon. B
